Cotton Farming in the US

Cotton Farming in the US

American cotton farmers are past their heyday. Their previous best customer, the domestic textile manufacturing industry is being driven into rapid decline by lower cost producers in India and China. However, the value of cotton seed production has risen over the last five years, despite lower production levels. Strong growth in oilseed prices is largely due to higher demand for all oilseeds. Farmers will benefit from lower fertilizer and seed prices. Both of these major cost categories expanded in the recent boom and have lagged on the way down

Borrowing and Investing

Posted on August 13th, 2010 in remainder books by

Sources of short term funding

Overdrafts: An overdraft is a facility granted by a bank which a business may or may not use. An overdraft is particularly suitable for financing day to day fluctuating requirements and is technically repayable on demand.

Short-term loans: The advantage compared with an overdraft is that the bank cannot request repayment until the end of the loan period. A disadvantage is that interest is payable for the entire duration of the loan, whereas the overdraft incurs interest only when the balance is overdrawn.

Trade payables: Taking credit from suppliers in the normal course of business is, on the face of it, a free source of finance. However it does have its costs in terms of potential early payment discounts forgone. Also if the credit period becomes excessive then supplier goodwill might be lost and the company’s credit rating might be affected adversely.

Factoring: Factors are organisations that advance cash against the security of the company’s receivables. The factor will advance up to 80% of the value of the debts, in return for a commission charge and interest. The factor will pay the remainder of the money to the company when the customers have settled their debts. The main advantage to the company is the reduction in the cost of administering the receivables ledger and credit control activities.

Sources of export finance

Bills of exchange: These allow the exporter to obtain immediate finance instead of having to wait until the end of the credit period, when the bill matures.

Forfaiting: This is where a bank purchases from a company a number of sales invoices or promissory notes, usually obtaining a guarantee that the invoices or notes will be paid.

Documentary credits: The buyer’s bank issues a letter of credit in favour of the exporter. The bank thereby guarantees payment to the exporter, which is particularly valuable where the risk of non-payment is high.

Exporters can also use an export factoring service, which is similar to the factoring of domestic trade debts discussed earlier.

Investment opportunities for short-term surpluses

The choice of investment requires a consideration of a number of factors.

Profitability: The optimum return must be earned on the funds invested.

Liquidity and appropriate maturity: It is important not to tie up short-term surplus funds so that they cannot be accessed when they are needed.

Safety: Any surplus must be kept secure and some investments are riskier than others.

Diversification: Risk can be reduced by investing in a range of different types of separate investments.

What opportunities are there to invest a short term surplus?

Interest bearing bank accounts: A range of accounts are available offering different facilities for earning interest on cash deposits.

Short term treasury bills: This is a government debt which does not pay interest, but which is issued at a price that is less than its value on maturity.

Marketable securities and negotiable instruments: These include gilts, bonds and certificates of deposit. They all earn interest and can be bought and sold.

Risk

Whatever the choice of investment, the risk must be assessed. Risk can be considered in terms of its effect on income, capital or both.

A Bad Literary Agent Can Be Worse Than No Agent At All.

Posted on August 8th, 2010 in remainder books by

Types of things to watch out for with agents:

* Charging the author a fee up front, to be accepted as a client. Can be called a reading fee, or a monthly “office expenses” charge. The best agents, and most successful ones, only charge a percentage fee of royalties the author earns, typically 15%. Suppose a realtor charged you a fee to come over and tour your house before getting the listing? How quickly would you show that realtor the door. . .

* Charging back unusually large “postage and copying fees” to send out an authors’ work. One crooked agency accepts almost every client that contacts them, but in the fine print of the contract they charge “postage and handling” of up to $10 per submission they send out on your behalf. It doesn’t cost $10 to send a letter and a sample chapter of a book to a publisher. This company makes a fortune from these fees whether or not they actually successfully market any of their clients work.

* Directing authors toward specific editing services or giving authors’ names to these services. Sometimes they even own the editing service. Some agents make a significant portion of their income from referral fees from these services.

* Terms in Agency contracts with writers vary widely. Must be read carefully. Not standard at all.

* The agent contacts publishers pretty much at random. The agent’s value to you is in the relationships they have with publishers, so that if the publisher hears from them, they know the book is worth taking a look at. Ask to see copies of rejection letters that come back from publishers. If it looks like just a form letter response, rather than a letter you would send to an acquaintance, you can bet the agent may be just picking names out of a directory of publishers.

* Puts forth a weak effort or gives up on the client’s project after a few months. You have a right to ask how active the agent is going to be. How many publishers are they going to contact, how will they follow up? You also have a right to periodic reports as to whom they have contacted and the results. You must determine how much time and attention they are really going to give you.

Another reason it is imperative to have a reputable agent is that the publishing house typically pays the agent, who deducts their “cut” and sends the remainder it to the author. It’s a frightening thought that a less than honest person gets their hands on the money you’ve earned from sweat, blood, and even tears.

Places to Visit in Agra

Posted on August 3rd, 2010 in remainder books by

Agra is the one of the prominent destinations of the World Tourism map with three heritage monuments- The Taj Mahal, Red Fort & Fatehpur Sikri. It is more just a decadent city of graveyards and stones, but it is a vibrant centre of Culture, Art and Religious philosophies that have enriched mankind and shaped human thought over centuries.

Agra is situated in the State of Uttar Pradesh, India. Agra is famous for handicrafts products such as Inley work on Marvel, Leather work, Footwear, Brasswear, Carpets, Jewellery, Zari and Embroidery work. It is also well known for Petha, Dalmoth and Gajak.

Agra is famous as being home to one of the seven wonders of the world-the Taj Mahal. The architectural splendor of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces is a vivid remainder of the mausoleums, the fort and the palaces is a vivid reminder of the capital in the 16th and early 17th centuries.

While its significance as a political centre ended with the transfer of the capital to Delhi in 1634 by Shah Jahan, its architectural wealth has secured its place on the international map.

A pleasant town with comparatively slow pace, Agra is known for its superb inlay work on marble and soapstone by craftsman who are descendant of those who worked under the Mughals. The city is also famous for its carpets, gold thread embroidery and leather shoes.

Agra was once the capital of the Mughal empire and even today it seems to linger in the past . Not surprising , for the Mughal emperors with their passion for building, endowed the city with some of the finest structures in the world . It is very easy to slip away here through the centuries into the grandeur and intrigues of the Mughal court.

Agra is an old city and it is said that its name was derived from Agrabana, a forest that finds mention in the epic Mahabharata.

In more recent times Agra came into prominence when Sikandar Lodi made it his capital city in 1501 . The Lodi rule was to end very soon and Agra passed into the possession of the Mughals.

It was during the time of the third emperor Akbar that Agra came into its own . He embarked on the construction of the massive Agra Fort in 1565. Though Akbar was diverted into building a new capital at Fatehpur sikri not far away.

Agra continued to retain its importance and Shah Jahan, Akbar’s grandson ornamented the city with that masterpiece of Mughal architecture – the Taj Mahal and built several other beautiful buildings within the Agra fort .

Has Information Marketing Become a Shady Business? Part 2

Posted on July 29th, 2010 in remainder books by

In my previous article on this topic, I discussed the many critical components of an effective sales process used in online information marketing. An effective sales process is one that connects with its audience. It is meant to stir emotions, identify a problem, offer solutions to the problem and proof that the solutions work. The most important part of the entire process is to get the audience to take the action necessary to ensure the sale is ultimately made.

An effective sales process is one that is very carefully and cleverly planned out, tested and refined in order to deliver maximum results. And that’s great – there is nothing at all wrong with a well orchestrated marketing and sales process. What I have a major issue with – and I’m sure I speak for many when I say this – is when conniving and lying are woven into the process. When the only goal of an information peddler is to get into your wallet and ethics be damned is when information marketing gets a bad name (and reputation).

And almost always, the information being sold by those who use unethical tactics is very generic in nature and the subject matter is on how to sell information – how ironic is that?

I’d like to tell you about an experience I had recently with an outfit calling themselves “Underground Cash Secrets”. (For the remainder of this article I’ll refer to this outfit as UCS.) I’m telling you this story in order to help you ferret out fraud to make sure you’ll be dealing with ONLY legitimate marketers who operate ethical businesses. UCS was one of the worst examples I’ve ever seen of the low level some charlatans will stoop in order to get money from your pocket in the name of information marketing. And, believe me, there are a lot of UCS’s out there now.

The landing page (a.k.a. sales letter) used to peddle the info package UCS made available for sale was text book and one of the best I’d ever seen. It had the all important, attention grabbing headline in red font face. It had red sub heads throughout the letter in order to keep your attention. It had an audio greeting, pictures of exotic sports cars and mansions, generic pictures of bank statements showing large balances and loads of testimonials. This letter had ALL the elements required to stir a person’s interest and to get the sale closed. This sales letter also made claim that the 32 year old person behind UCS was sooooo successful, that he was literally living the life of a rock star.

Of course, this sales letter offered a TON of free bonuses. For buying the primary package being offered, the buyer would receive an additional $2189.94 worth of free bonuses. This is just one of the sleazy tactics used in order to chisel money from your pocket. I understand it’s important that the buyer feel they’re receiving great value for their money. But, come on, $2200 worth of additional freebies just for spending $49? I personally find this tactic very offensive. I mean, how stupid do these people think we are?

Another all too familiar tactic used is the scarcity angle. The idea is to make you feel that your time to buy the information package is very limited so you better act right now. The UCS web site claimed that only 1000 packages were being made available for sale and there were only 37 left. Once those final 37 were sold, the offer would be gone for good. What nonsense! First of all, for the past several months that I’ve monitored this site, the number has never changed. The ongoing claim is that only 37 of these wonderful packages are available. Second of all, why would someone who has become so successful selling info online stop at 1000 units sold? If they were able to sell 50,000 units, why wouldn’t they do it?

After looking at this sales letter with a huge, skeptical “Yeah Right”, I clicked on the link for the transaction page. I don’t know why, I really had no intention of buying what was being offered. When I went to close the transaction page, an exit message popped up announcing a “Today only deep discount”. The message was now offering me the $49 package for only $17 – this was the discounted price that UCS normally offers to family and friends; or so said the pop up message. This just shows how desperate this particular charlatan was to get any amount of money that he possible could from his site visitors.

Again, for a reason I’m not even sure of, I went back to the transaction page where I was now able to buy this package for $17 (mind you, including the $2200 worth of free bonuses). Now, does this smack of fraudulent nonsense or is it just me? For a second time I proceeded to close out the transaction page and again, an exit message popped up now offering this package for $7. Imagine that, the shyster behind this web site was that desperate to get something – anything – from his visitors, he was now willing to sell the package for only a few bucks.

Well, this time I figured what the heck – for $7 I’ll get this package that was originally $49. Try this for yourself next time – I’ve found that the exit pop-up is becoming more and more popular amongst information marketers.

In the end, by purchasing the package being offered by UCS, I found myself in possession of several hundred copyright free articles and e-books. What I’ve decided to do is make ALL of these materials FREE on my web site. Simply visit my site, peruse the directories to be found there and help yourself to any and all of them. Truthfully, the information being offered by the UCS web site is terrific information. Obviously, it’s the low down, underhanded tactics used to make the sale that I took issue with.

I hope I didn’t sound too cynical in this article towards information marketing. I’ve purchased tons of great information online. What I set out to do was tip you off to the fraudulent tactics used by some – certainly, not all – online info marketers. My intention is to help you avoid getting taken by the growing number of snake oil salesmen to be found online today.

The internet has become the number one most significant business tool created by mankind. Used properly, you can use the internet to research, start, run and effectively market a business of your own. Exercise a little caution when using the web and you’ll be sure to thrive in a supportive environment while at the same time, staying clear of those who seek to prey on the dreams of decent folks.

Comics For Extra Credit – Part 2

Posted on July 19th, 2010 in remainder books by

My first post about comics as an educational aid generated an interesting response – from the managing director of Classical Comics, a comic book company in the United Kingdom. Not to be confused with Classic Comics, often teasingly referred to as a study guide for college literature classes here in the State, Classical Comics turns classical literature into high-quality visual graphic novels.

Founded two and a half years ago, Classical Comics first title was Henry the V in November, 2007, followed by the launch of a Macbeth graphic novel in February, 2008. The Macbeth title received the endorsement of Shakespearean actor, and former Star Trek, The Next Generationstar Patrick Stewart. Upcoming titles for the remainder of 2008 include: Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, and a Christmas Carol. Seven new titles are planned for 2009.

Unlike prior educational efforts, Classical Comics’ titles come in four text options: the original text of the play or novel, plain text translation, a quick text for younger readers, and, a blank text where readers may fill in the captions and bubbles. The first titles are also accompanied by detailed study guides, aimed at the British equivalent of grades kindergarten through middle school. While the titles are too new for the company to have collected readership data, the original version would be likely targeted at ninth and tenth graders with the translations to be more popular with younger readers. I will know better shortly, as the company has shipped me a box of the titles. I have been warned that it will be a very heavy box!

Classical Comics’ managing director Karen Wenborn, a marketer and self-professed avid reader said that the first titles have been well-received because of their high visual quality, substantial feel (gloss paper, much like hardbound graphic novels) and efforts to be true to the period of the story. From viewing covers for the titles at Classical Comics’ website, artwork and action are quite similar to the modern superhero genre. Wenborn pointed out that past efforts to represent classical literature in comics have faltered because the artwork had not been kept up to date; she added that while those titles are being reprinted in the original art, their largest market in the U.K is nostalgia buffs, as opposed to students and educators.

I agree with Karen that visual quality is essential for the success of these titles. Super heroes are actually “old” characters in the United States, for instance, Batman and Superman characters from the 1940’s. Spiderman, Hulk and Ironman are creations from the early 1960’s. Yet these titles succeed, not because they have been made into cartoons and movies, but because their look has been considerably freshened up to appeal to adults (who bought the titles as kids) as well as children. Characters from the 1940’s and 1960’s have had to keep up with the times, as well as technology.

A graphic novel of a classic book, by comparison, does not need to be “updated,” but artistic techniques, combined with historical research, make the story truer to the time it took place. The reader will be comparing their first exposure to these stories with movies that use computer-generated images. A plain text book with no illustrations or one of the original comics will appear dull compared to the visual representations kids see today in comics, video games and movies.

However, Karen explained that Classical Comics are more expensive to produce than similar graphic novels because of the research required for powerful visual effects as well as translations. I see only two obstacles to success: cost to schools versus a more traditional book (which is serious in times of tight budgets in U.S. public schools) and past beliefs about comics among individual educators. I have to ask if librarians might be a stronger market for U.S. expansion; they are more likely to promote the entertainment value of reading than teachers. However, if I were a teacher, and especially if I were the head of a high school English department, I would be trying to negotiate a fair price on original and basic text versions of these books. I know they would entice students to read other titles on their own.

Karen told me that the titles have been very well received in the U.K; they have received the endorsement of Shakespeare for Kidz, an international non-profit organization that provides Shakespeare education to children through a variety of media, and the National Association for the Teaching of English.

I look forward to seeing these titles and reviewing them for you.
